The 67th Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 2, 2025, and awarded artists, compositions, and recordings selected by the Recording Academy. Comedian Noah Trevor hosted the ceremony for the fifth year in a row.
The award for Best New Artist went to Chappel Roan. During her acceptance speech, she spoke out about record labels not paying a living wage to struggling artists like she once was, she demanded healthcare given to these struggling artists from the labels. Nominees for Best New Artists include Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, Raye, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims.
The award for Album of the Year went to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter. Nominees for this category include André 3000’s New Blue Sun, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, Charli XCX’s Brat, Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department. Many are unsatisfied and believe Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft was snubbed and should have won for the category. According to Zoe Valianatos, a freshman at West Morris Mendham, “Cowboy Carter was like a fake country album and it didn’t deserve to win because it had a lot less streams than Billie Eilish and was a lot less well known.”
Kendrick Lamar won both Song and Record of the Year for his Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” “Not Like Us,” received all five awards it was nominated for making it the most decorated song in the history of Grammy Awards. Nominees for Record of the Year include the Beatles’ “Now and Then,” Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” Charli XCX’s “360,” Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!,” and Taylor Swift and Post Malone’s “Fortnight.” Nominees for Song of the Year include Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die with a Smile,” Taylor Swift and Post Malone’s “Fortnight,” Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” and Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
Performers during the ceremony include Dawes, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, and St. Vincent who performed “I Love L.A.” as a tribute to Loss Angeles, Billie Eilish and Finneas who performed “Birds of a Feather,” Sabrina Carpenter who performed “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” Chappell Roan who performed “Pink Pony Club,” Khruangbin who performed “May Ninth,” Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga who performed “California Dreamin’” as a tribute to Los Angeles, Chris Martin and Grace Bowers who performed “All My Love,” Shakira who performed “Ojos Así” and “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” and Charli XCX who performed “Von Dutch” and “Guess.”
Benson Boone, Doechii, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey, and Raye all performed in a Medley composed of nominees for the Best New Artist Award. Benson Boone performed “Beautiful Things.” Doechii performed “Catfish” and “Denial is a River.” Teddy Swims performed “Lose Control.” Shaboozey performed “Good News” and “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” Raye Performed “Oscar Winning Tears.”
Herbie Hancock, Cynthia Erivo, Lainey Wilson, Jacob Collier, Stevie Wonder, and Janelle Monáe all performed for a tribute to Quincy Jones who passed away the previous November before the ceremony. The songs performed in the tribute include “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Let the Good Times Roll,” “Bluesette,” “We Are the World,” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” All songs were produced by Jones throughout his career.
The performances were all unique and displayed talent from all artists performing. According to Sarah Fourie, a freshman at West Morris Mendham, “[Benson Boone’s performance] was my favorite of them, because he doze he did a bunch of flips of also like singing I thought it was cool.”
Many performances paid tribute to Los Angeles which had been faced with many wildfires affecting all of South California. Commercials played during the broadcast of the awards highlighted small businesses in Los Angeles affected by the fires and some artists made guest appearances in the commercials.
