Mendham High School’s Marching Band is making great strides (while in step!) this year both in competition and during football games. The theme of the marching band’s show is “The Witching Hour,” organized by music teacher and band director Mr. Gibbons. Ms. Boos, the color guard instructor, has choreographed a hauntingly beautiful routing for the color guard team, and with the melodious work of the band, dedication of all the students, parents, and other behind-the-scenes crew, Mendham’s Marching Band has been making history this year!
Mendham has now taken two first place titles out of their two competitions this season, a rare feat that has not accomplished in several years. Mr. Gibbons, former Band Director at West Morris Central, expressed excitement at being transferred to Mendham this year and shared his passion for marching band. “I love the community it creates,” he explained. “It’s a safe but competitive environment.” And the competition is heating up! Mendham Marching Band, led by Drum Majors Campbell Porter and Andrew Tomasco, Band Captain Max Wank, and Color Guard Captain Jessey Rejano, will move on to Regional Championships on October 22 as West Essex High School. State Championships will follow the week after on October 29 at TCNJ.
When asked about his continued passion for marching band over the years, Mr. Gibbons summed it up perfectly: “It’s an activity for the students that they really bond over throughout the season,” and create lasting friendships and memories to better their high school experiences. Marching band has a place for everyone, and all the sounds of the different instruments blend together in perfect harmony, creating a victorious anthem for all.
