Battle Between Trump and Tik Tok

There has been a lot of controversy with the new social media platform, Tik Tok. Similar to vine, it is an app where people only share videos that are no longer than a minute. According to Business of Apps Tik Tok has roughly 500 million people using the app from across the globe. Although it is being used globally, the president, Donald Trump, has an issue with it being used in the United States.

Since Tik Tok is owned by a Chinese data farming company, the Chinese government could potentially have access to all their data. The CNET says that the US Army as well as the US Navy have already prohibited Tik Tok from being downloaded by service members. The US Senate and the House of Representatives have also vowed not to download Tik Tok on government issued phones. The president and his team have been keeping an eye on Tik Tok since early July, but just recently decided to take action. Currently, the only way Tik Tok will not be banned in the US is if it is bought by a US company before November 12.

Even though there is a Cinese law that was passed in 2017 that states that the Chinese government must still comply with national security laws, that is not enough to stop Trump from potentially suing Tik Tok. Although it may seem far fetched to ban an app, the US is not alone. India already banned the app and Australia almost did but decided against it last minute.
