Student Shout Outs: Ally Laird

On April 12 Mendham’s softball team visited sister school West Morris Central in a competition that tested the team’s offense. In the rain, the two teams went back and forth following a 2-0 Mendham lead in the first inning. Immediately after Central evened the score, going on to elevate their lead to 3-2 after four innings. Fortunately, Mendham was able to come to respond with an explosive fifth bringing themselves to a 2 run advantage over Central. The large surge of the offense was met with excitement. According to head Coach Lori Welles, “We’ve been struggling with the bat out first couple games, we won our first two games but it wasn’t like we were power hitting.” The emotions were short-lived, however, as a solo-run homerun from Mendham brought the team within one run. A two-run double followed, establishing another Wolfpack lead, 6-5. The team had one more opportunity in the seventh to end the game. Runners from Mendham were on both third and second base, with 2 outs to go. Junior Ally laird successfully gave Mendham the two-run lead off a double. The top of the seventh came to a close with an 8-6 Mendham lead, and Ally Laird was in charge of closing out the West Morris Central team. “I was definitely nervous once again, I had to trust my team on that one. We were really hyped for this game.” Luckily for the Mendham team, no runs ended up being scored, and Mendham left with a victory.
