While Mendham Varsity Field Hockey experienced a challenging season with a record of 3-13, the team focused on growth and conditioning more so than before. Despite a difficult season, the team graduates 9 seniors who have worked diligently over the years and have built strong team bonds.
According to Madison Gillard, a sophomore and defender for Varsity Field Hockey, “the experience with changing head coaches was certainly challenging for some, as some players were playing with our previous coach for the past three years, and the way things were run drastically changed.” With a change in coaches, as Elizabeth Tolley was replaced by Michelle Hennelly, the operational approach changed, and the team worked to adjust to this new approach. The varsity squad also welcomed 3 freshmen players, and with a series of injuries, younger players had to step up and fill key positions. Highlights of the season include the team’s Senior Night and all the gestures made in honor of the seniors, Celia Kearns making over 100 saves, and Sophia Tsakiris leading the team in defensive saves. Congratulations to the team on their season, and best of luck as the team continues to build around the new coaching philosophy in the years ahead.
