Mendham High School’s Spring Track season is officially underway, having begun in March and will continue near the end of the school year. Both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams are working tirelessly for their upcoming meets and pushing towards a successful season. The coaches (Ms. Babus and Mr. Blagogee) are working just as hard and serving as role models for the students. Mr. Blagogee, the new Head Coach of the Boys’ team, shared his goals of getting started and becoming comfortable with the team in a prior article. Ms. Babus coaches the Girls’, and it seems she’s ready for a great season.
Their most recent meet was on Thursday, 4/23. Both teams competed at home against Morristown High School and the Girls’ team competed at the 130th Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The next meet for Varsity and JV will be on Wednesday, 4/29, for county relays, against Randolph High School.
When asked about the outlook for the Girls’ team, captain Shayla Wamsley shared, “I’d say the biggest goal is to just keep going strong… I hope we have a bunch of people who make it farther… I’m hoping to have the same success this year.” The season has only just begun, but with the dedication shown throughout the team, the girls will hopefully accomplish what they’d like to this spring. Every year, new underclassmen join the Mendham running community, and they search for a welcoming place to spend their time. Shayla shared some advice she’d give to the underclassmen, now having lived the Mendham Track experience since her freshman year: “…It can be really intimidating when you first join… I recommend everyone who tries it to at least give it a season… understand that there is a bunch of struggles, but there are also rewards.”
The Girls’ team shows lots of dedication, and the boys seem to be starting on a good foot as well. Captain Dontrell Woody shared his personal goals for the 2026 season, “…going to nationals in the summer is definitely an outlook for me… and compete amongst the best New Jersey track teams.” Dontrell has been running since his freshman year, hoping to continue after graduation. Track is a sport and something people do to pass the time or just listen to themselves. However, it can also be a learning experience. Dontrell shared what he had learned from track and his community: “…People can bail you out, but track is you against yourself… If you don’t put in the work, it will show every single time.”
The teams are ready for a great spring. The athletes are working hard and are loyal to their teams, wanting the best for themselves and others around them. The Mendham Track season seems to have started strong, and the hopes are that it will end even stronger.
