Once fall sports concluded, winter sports quickly began, to many students’ excitement. While Mendham’s sports teams are extremely successful, Mendham Girls Basketball is predicted to win many games this season with Varsity head coach Hillary Milner, a guidance counselor at Mendham High School. Coach Milner has coached for many years and has another very exciting and rewarding season underway.
Mendham Girls Basketball brings lots of enthusiasm and excitement to the court. The girls practice for countless hours throughout the week, which is clearly shown by the team’s performance. During the winter break, the girls played in a multischool tournament and they remained undefeated during the tournament. The girls team is known for their strong defense and incredible communication skills with one another. Mendham Girls Basketball’s previous season was extremely successful, as Senior Captain Delaney Bogdan says, “Our previous season was really fun; we also did really well. This definitely puts a target on our back as other teams really want to beat us this season.” The girls had a 17-10 record last season, losing against tough teams such as Scotch Plains-Fanwood, and Morris Knolls. Bogdan looks forward to the rematch against West Morris Central. She is hopeful that with the right mindset and performance Mendham has more than enough potential to take down Central.
Going into the 2023-2024 season, Mendham lost three seniors from the previous year. Mendham has been practicing and working hard to compensate for their lost players, and they have done an amazing job. This current season, the basketball team has an astounding record of eight wins and two losses, losing only to Scotch Plains-Fanwood and West Morris Central. Bogdan states that the team’s key to success is always remaining positive on and off the court, regardless of if they are down or not. The team’s roster is filled with a lot of potential, so Mendham will undoubtedly have a very successful season. Bogdan is accompanied by Captain Lia Manuel. This year’s varsity team consists of Halle Ferrara, Lila Schoenfeld, Reagan Kelly, Mary Hope Swarts, Lia Manuel, Delaney Bogdan, Amelia Eichman, Shea Torgersen, Curran Capuzzi, Maddie Pela, Sophia Keoskey, Abby Deegan, and July Goldstein. Manuel leads the team in many categories including most two- and three-pointers. Halle Ferrara and Amelia Eichman are other large scorers for Mendham.
Bogdan asserts,”My biggest goal for our team is to grow closer as a team, and continue to work together. I know that will help us make it far into counties and states.” Mendham is expected to continue to make it far into all of the tournaments they face this year. It is clear that Mendham Girls Basketball is an extremely strong team, and they are an extremely fun team to watch. Their strong work ethic and high energy is visible on and off of the court. They deserve all of the achievements they earn throughout the season.
