Musical Performances at the Biden Inauguration
January 28, 2021
The inauguration of Joe Biden was a monumental occasion for America, marking an important transfership of leadership. Like most inaugurations, there were multiple musical performances, both live and pre-recorded. A large variety of musicians was present- ranging from Jennifer Lawerence to Bruce Springsteen to The Foo Fighters (Variety). However- which performances were the best, and which ones were a bit lackluster?
One of the standout moments was Lady Gaga singing the national anthem (LA Times). Gaga wasn’t aiming to stand out as she had in the past, like when she wore a meat dress to an award’s show, which put more emphasis on her stellar vocals (Billboard). It was an amazing introduction to the inaugural proceedings. However, Jennifer Lawerence’s performance of a medley of patriotic songs did not hold the same power (Boston). It certainly was not bad, but was less moving and interesting than Gaga’s performance earlier on.
Later in the day came more performances, during the celebration of the power exchange. One of the first performances shown was Bruce Springsteen’s, in which he sung “Land of Hopes and Dreams” (CNN). Springsteen, as always, was incredible, and
the song carried a lot of meaning, making it perfect for such an important occasion. Ant Clemons and Justin Timberlake came together for a performance of “Better Days” to honor those spreading kindness during this difficult time (CNN). Although the song was not as interesting or complex as other performances, the meaning behind it made up for it. A similar thing can be said about Katy Perry’s “Firework” performance at the end of the festivities (CNN). A performance that really stood out to me was that of the Black Pumas (LA Times). Despite being lesser-known that other artists at the inauguration, their performance had a different energy from many others and was very enjoyable. My personal favorite act of the night was Foo Fighters, who performed “Times Like These” (CNN). The song is simply iconic, and they all brought unbelievable energy to the performance. Plus, the meaning of the song is almost overly fitting of what America is going through currently. More now than ever, it’s important to remember that, in times like these, “you learn to love again”.
