As Mendham High begins the school year under the leadership of Principal Mrs. Meagher, the community also welcomes Ms. Luisella Marolda as Assistant Principal. With nearly two decades of experience in education, Ms. Marolda brings both the perspective of a classroom teacher and the expertise of an administrator. Her career has spanned roles as a math instructor, department chair, mentor, and coach, culminating most recently in her work as Assistant Principal at Northern Valley Regional High School.
When asked what continues to inspire her after so many years in education, Ms. Marolda pointed to the students themselves. “Honestly, it’s young people,” she says. “There’s an energy of constant growth and learning, and I’ve grown to really enjoy the challenge of making learning feel accessible and not intimidating.”
Her approach to leadership, both collaborative and practical, involves “rolling up [her] sleeves and modeling what [she’s] asking of others,” whether with teachers or with students. “It’s just as important to step back and let people take ownership,” she explains. “Balance is essential.”
Building relationships is central to Ms. Marolda’s approach, and she strives to connect with students, staff, and families in meaningful ways by being “visible and present.” She says, “I try to touch base with students and families… more just like a human being,” emphasizing that the most effective way to connect is showing that “we’re in it together” rather than creating an “I’ve got you” dynamic. By regularly popping into classrooms, attending games, and participating in school events, she becomes a familiar and approachable presence, allowing students and staff to feel comfortable being authentic. Ms. Marolda also makes it a point to attend games and school events, demonstrating her commitment to the community and reinforcing her presence.
For Ms. Marolda, the most important thing for students to feel supported and successful is safety. “From security protocols at the door, to drills, to having a classroom environment where you can ask a question and not be made fun of,” all contribute to students feeling secure. “It seems that that’s pretty tight here,” she adds, noting the safe, supportive atmosphere that is prioritized at Mendham.
Looking ahead, she intends to spend her first year focused on understanding Mendham’s culture and traditions. “My personal goal is to learn as much as I can—to build relationships, establish trust, and get to know the spirit of this community. Once that foundation is in place, I can bring in ideas and experiences that might enhance what already makes Mendham special.” She is particularly eager to participate in school traditions, noting that “homecoming is something [she’s] curious about.” The outdoor pep rally was “already such a great example of the school spirit at Mendham,” she includes. She additionally emphasizes how Ms. Meagher and Mr. Abdelaziz have been “tremendous” in helping her transition and making her feel “welcomed immediately…[she is] truly thankful for their support and mentorship.”
Outside of her professional life, Ms. Marolda is a proud mother of two boys. During college, she enjoyed spending time behind the scenes in stage crew, eventually stage-managing campus dance concerts.
With her dedication to students, her steady leadership, and her enthusiasm for Mendham’s traditions, Ms. Marolda is already beginning to make her mark on the community.
