I recently had the pleasure of attending Charli XCX’s Brat Tour on May 3rd for her third Brooklyn show. Like many concerts I had been to recently, my seats were horrific due to reseller prices, but that did not stop me from having a good time. The sold-out show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn was full of concert-goers in neon green Brat shirts, filled with energy as they danced to Charli’s biggest hits.
The show was entirely Charli moving across the stage without any backup dancers or a visible band. The show felt unchoreographed, which is not negative, as Charli knew how to own the stage and make a large stage presence. There are moments where Charli interacts with the stage, making the show more exciting. During “365 featuring shygirl,” she pulls down a giant Brat tarp that covers the whole stage, during “party 4 u,” a giant strip of LED lights comes down that she carries around, and during “Track 10,” a rain machine comes on and Charli performs while getting drenched.
One issue I had with the concert was its lack of diversity in the setlist. The setlist was composed of “365 featuring shygirl,” “360,” “Von Dutch,” “Rewind,” “I might say something stupid,” “Club classics,” “Unlock It (feat. Kim Petras and Jay Park),” “Talk talk,” “Apple,” “So I,” “So I featuring a. g. cook,” “Spring breakers,” “Girl, so confusing featuring lorde,” “Everything is romantic,” “Speed Drive,” “Sympathy is a knife,” “Guess featuring Billie Eilish,” “365,” “party 4 u,” “Vroom Vroom,” “Track 10,” and “I Love It (feat. Charli XCX),” respectively. Sixteen of the twenty-two songs on the tour were from her Brat album and its extended, remix album, Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat. That only leaves six songs from her other albums. I would have loved to hear more of her previous hits and hidden gems from her albums.
Overall, the concert was a great experience. Charli XCX’s vocals were amazing, especially in “So I,” where she puts a lot of emotion into her sound. The way the songs were remixed to fit the tour made it a more unique experience than just listening to the album. It is devastating that I will not have the opportunity to go to the concert again.
