This is the first year that the Mendham Unified team will be participating in the newly founded flag football season. Our school has explored and experienced this unique new partnership between Unified and the Jets football team. This partnership allowed for Mendham’s Unified team to receive new sports jerseys and an opportunity to visit the Jets football facility for a clinic led by their staff, as well as Jets quarterback Adrian Martinez.
The Mendham community, which included students, teachers, and coaches who are involved in the program, was asked about their thoughts on the change of sport in the season and the intriguing partnership with the Jets.
When asked about an important moment that came from this partnership, “Not only have they helped with uniforms, supplies, and coordinating the league, but they have also provided some opportunities for us as coaches to learn from some of the more established programs,” Coach Milner replied. Coach Milner also expressed that “the Jets’ involvement has allowed some of our students to show off their skills.”
Often it feels that the Unified spring season is overlooked when compared to others, however, this year Ms. Van Orden “[felt] like students have been participating a lot more” and that “a couple of students who were on the fence about joining flag football jumped in once they heard about the Jets partnership.” She also noted that this unique excitement comes with trying something new and said that she is “really looking forward to the season.”
Ms. Meyh, a former teacher at Mendham, now a Unified volunteer, expressed that the Jets clinic was “well-organized and exciting” and that the Jets’ resources and energy have transformed the Unified flag football program.
Student Emma Pela responded to the experience in a similar light, explaining that it “taught [her] new skills and gave [her] more respect for professional athletes.” She felt that “interacting with Jets players and staff was educational and empowering” and that the clinic was a “unique and enjoyable experience.”
Nothing is confirmed for next year; however, according to Coach Milner, Mendham Unified may be seeing another flag football season with some consideration of track and field.
