Bring Your Kid to Work Day is an event held annually on the fourth Thursday of April. It is an event where parents will bring their children to their work to give them a sense of what their future may look like. Over the past couple of years, Mendham has not offered much for the faculty’s children to experience in the school. This year, West Morris Mendham High School organized an experience for the faculty’s children to come into the school and experience their parents’ typical workday. You may have seen some of your teachers’ children in classrooms and roaming the halls, or fellow classmates missing from their desks, and it was because they were experiencing their parents in the workplace.
Bring Your Kid to Work Day began as Take Our Daughters to Work Day in 1992 and was created by the Ms. Foundation for Women. It was first hosted on March 26, 1993. The program was expanded in 2003 to include boys; many companies participating in the event included boys from the start.
Mendham offered many different activities for the faculty’s children, hosted by various teachers. According to Mrs. Kober, English teacher and organizer of Bring Your Kid to Work Day at Mendham High School, “I think it’s good for kids to see what their parents do when they actually go to work and what different professions can look like, whether they’re going to go down that pathway or not.” The event is held to teach children about careers and to give them insight into what they might be doing in the future.
Mrs. Kober stated, “I’d like to add a thank you to the faculty and staff members who’ve been willing to work with me and partner with me on this that includes Mrs. Meagher from the administration standpoint, to all the different teachers who are willing to open up their classrooms or give up a free period to spend time with the students coming into the classroom. I’d like to thank all of these teachers for being welcoming and willing to share why they have pursued the profession of education and what teaching means to them.” It means a lot to the kids that our school filled their day with fun activities and a sense of what working in a high school environment looks like. Students were able to join a variety of sessions from Physics, Choir, World Language, Cooking, and many more. Thank you to Ms. Fantasia, Mr. Mule, Ms. Cadden, Ms. Danner, Mrs. Castro, Ms. Bauberger, Ms. Cooley, Ms. Ruiz, Mr. Santucci, and Mrs. DeMiceli.
We look forward to seeing how the program expands in the years to come.
