Back in October of 2021 the film adaptation for Dune was first released. The Dune novel is very popular so fans were eager to see what it would look like on the big screen. The movie was received very well by both critics and fans, both scoring very high on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving lots of praise online. The one criticism that seemed to loom over this film was that it felt like an incomplete movie. The director was quick to confirm that this was only Part 1 of the story and there would be a second part in the coming years. Now, three years later the fans finally have the second part. Many fans were hoping that it would live up to the expectations of the first. The early reactions from critics are now in and it seems this film delivers on all aspects and then some. Being described as a true masterclass in filmmaking and the reason we go to the theaters. With the release date to the general public only a few days away, the hype has peaked and fans are eager to experience this supposed masterpiece of a film(insert quote).
The Dune novels date all the way back to 1965 and were followed by another 6 books after that. By looking at the reviews of this series, the audience will begin to understand why the novelists wanted to make a film adaptation. The book series is highly praised by critics which has allowed the series to continue over the years. With how popular this book series is and the increasing popularity of book adaptations in film, one could assume Dune would eventually be getting its own film adaptation. That day came in 1984 when the first adaptation of Dune was released. Unfortunately for fans of the series, this film didn’t get the positive reviews they were looking for which caused them to crush all hopes for a sequel. It took years before a new director and studio announced they would create a new adaptation of Dune, set to release about 35 years after the first release in 2019-2020. Unfortunately, the lockdown delayed this movie until late 2021, but when it was finally released, it seemed to be worth the wait. Dune got much better reviews than the previous adaptation, receiving a rare split of positive reviews from both critics and fans. Even with the delay and the decreased amount of people visiting the theaters, the film performed well enough that fans were eager for a sequel. The second film was soon announced and now in 2024, it is here and here to impress.
One of the only criticisms of the first film was that it felt like a complete movie and more of a slower buildup story to something bigger. When the second one was announced fans hoped that it was a direct continuation of the same story and didn’t branch off into something completely different. Luckily according to the early reviews, this film is the former. According to rotten tomatoes reviewers, it is the perfect continuation of the story that must be seen in the theaters. According to reviewer Hoai-Tran Bui it was“A sci-fi epic for the ages: a sweeping tragedy of mythic proportions, a cautionary tale of the perils of zealotry. It’s a towering feat of sci-fi cinema that will put Dune: Part Two in contention for the pantheon of greatest sequels ever”. This is high praise considering the films that are in that conversation such as The Dark Knight and The Godfather Part II. The director of the film Dennis Villenueve mentioned that the theater was the best way to watch this film in order to fully appreciate the technical anomaly it is. Reviewers are also praising the acting performances this film has to offer(Insert quote here)Many of this film’s reviews from both critics and fans who got to see it early put it up there as one of the greatest sequels of all time. With all of the positive reviews, it was projected to make a lot of money in its first opening weekend.
After the first opening weekend had passed, it made a staggering 81 million dollars at the box office, scoring a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
