The New England Patriots, A Lost Dynasty, What’s Their Next Step Towards Greatness?

James Porter-Delgardo, Sports

The New England Patriots, one of the most notorious franchises in American Sports. They’re best known for their recent success in the National Football League over the last 21 years.

Since 2002, the Patriots led by Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick have been orchestrating historic Super Bowl comebacks from deficits up to 25 points. With the loss of franchise quarterback last year, Tom Brady, what once was the Patriots dynasty is now in ruins.

It was doomed to happen, everything that is good must come to an end, Rome must collapse. Although all is not lost for the Patriots. Since Belicheck has remained with the Patriots, he for sure has something in store as this team is trying to restart a dynasty.

It’s obvious that Belicheck is trying to put more attention into the offense since the Patriots do have a solid defense. Even though Cam Newton, starting quarterback for the Patriots, had one of his worst seasons last year, Belicheck is putting more faith into Newton’s talents with Newton’s resigning. With Newton’s age, and how bad he did last year, how with the little receiving options the Patriots have, is Newton going to help this team reach the playoffs at all?

We all have seen Cam Newton throw the ball with precision before, but with young and developing receivers like N’Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers, and a run-oriented offense, Newton is going to have to put on a show. Receivers like Harry and Meyers are still developing receivers, and with Harry who can rarely get open, Newton is going to have to be extra precise with his passes. The Patriot’s receiving core really fell apart when Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan, and Rob Gronkowski left the Patriots.

The Patriots are also currently looking at someone new to lead the helm for this team. Quarterback Trey Lance from North Dakota State is the top young prospect at the moment for the Patriots. He is currently projected to be a top-10 pick in the draft. The Patriots like him so much because of his size; Lance is a 6’4 224-pound pocket passer who can run if he wants to.

It’s not only his physical stature that catches a scouts eye, it’s his resume. In 2019 Lance took NDSU to a 16-0 record where they won a national championship. With Lance most likely going 1-10 in the NFL draft next year, the Patriots are either going to have to trade or pray Lance drops in the draft in order to draft him with the 15th pick.

It seems as the Patriot’s defense is already set and that they don’t need to tweak that very much as they have an abundance of veterans in that starting lineup. It’s the offense where they lack veterans and leadership that can lead them to victory and into the playoffs.

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski leaving, the Patriot’s 11 season playoff streak ending, this all had to happen at one time or another. The Patriots dynasty is over and it’s just that simple, but there’s no doubt that they will be able to build themselves back into a title contender in the next few seasons to come.
