Matthew Stafford Traded To The Rams
February 5, 2021
Matthew Stafford, the quarterback of the Detroit Lions for the last eleven years, has been traded to the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford was traded to the Rams for Jared Goff, a third round draft pick in 2021, a first round pick in 2022 and a first round pick in 2023. Matthew Stafford had requested a trade before this trade was completed so this trade did not come out of nowhere.
Matthew Stafford has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for the last eleven years, but he has never been able to have a chance to compete for a championship. However now that he has been traded to the Rams a team that has been to the super bowl in the last three years and has won a playoff game this year. Since the Rams now acquired a star quarterback, it could be the thing that helps bring the Rams over the top and make them a serious super bowl contender.
Even though the Lions traded away their star quarterback they did not lose the trade. In the NFL it is always important to build up as much draft capital as possible so you can have young players that can develop over time. The Lions were also able to acquire the former number one overall pick Jared Goff, who has not gotten off to the best start in the NFL compared to other number one overall quarterbacks selected in drafts but still has a lot of potential.
In my opinion, the Rams won this trade for now but in the future, the Lions will really benefit from acquiring two first round picks. There is a ceiling for how high the Rams could go with Stafford being 32 in the future, but right now with the acquisition of Stafford, the Rams are major contenders.
