Top 3 Heisman Contenders
December 21, 2020
The Heisman trophy is an award given to the best player in college football and is always up for debate throughout the season. This year’s Heisman trophy is as up for debate as to the Heisman ever has been, partially due to some players not getting opportunities in certain games due to covid. The impacts covid had on the season leave us in the final week of the regular season with no clear front runners, but I feel as though I have narrowed it down to three contenders.
1.Devonta Smith
The senior wide receiver from Alabama has caught 83 passes for 1,327 yards and 15 TDS. Devonta plays for the number one team in the country and is the best skill position player on its roster. After Jaylon Waddle was ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury, Smith stepped up and has not looked back. He has had an incredible season including two games of over 200 yards receiving and 5 games with multiple touchdowns.
2. Mac Jones
The junior quarterback for the number one team in the country Alabama has had an excellent year he has thrown for 3,321 yards and 27 touchdowns. Mac Jones is not a flashy player but he has a great arm and accuracy. Mac Jones is the starting quarterback for the number one team in the country so he deserves to be in the conversation.
3.Ian Book
Ian Book the 5th year senior, quarterback, for Notre Dame is not as good statistically as the other players on this list, but he is a true playmaker. He is good at extending plays outside of the pocket and throwing on the run. Ian Book does not have the best stats but he has the best moment: a win against number one Clemson. Ian Book led them to a double-overtime win which included a 91-yard drive with under two minutes left to send the game to overtime.
