Many people know Miley Cyrus as the girl who played the role of Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. As her career progresses, so does her style in her music and song writing. Miley Cyrus has created songs that have gone through multiple genres such as country and pop. However, recently she has switched gears in the style of music with the new album released titled “Plastic Hearts”. This album is considered punk rock as her previous music was not in this genre. Recently, this album reached #1 on listened rock albums.
Playing her role as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel, no one expected the popstar to shift to her wild side and come out with punk rock music. All of that changed with the release of her song “Wrecking Ball” that came out in 2013 (NPR). Throughout her career, Miley Cyrus has struggled to find her exact place in the music industry. “In the drastic swing between between her roots and rock records of the late 2000s and the pop and hip-hop moves she pulled at the beginning of the next decade, there is massive tension between the singer’s pedigree as the daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus (and goddaughter to icon Dolly Parton) and her desire to be seen as something, anything else”(Vulture).
The new album titled “Plastic Hearts” that came out in November of this year, features artists such as Dua Lipa, Billy Idol, Stevie Nicks, and Joan Jett. What gained Cyrus popularity on this album was her cover of Heart of Glass by Blondie that she cultivated the audience with at the IHeart Music Festival. On this album she portrays a voice she hasn’t ever shown before. Her deep, rock styled voice astonished her fans, as her previous music has mostly been pop or rap. Rolling Stone adds, “Trying it all together is Cyrus, whose full-throated vocals turn the whole album into an instant karaoke go-to”.
The new approach to her career may shift Miley Cyrus’ future tunes and can ultimately influence her persona that is established to her fans.
