Recently, Australia has been tackling yet another devastating forest fire. This one happens to be on Fraser Island, which is off the east coast of Australia.

Fraser Island holds the title of the world’s largest sand island and contains an environment with sand dune lakes and a tropical forest along with a large population of wild dogs. It is on a list as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also called K’gari which is the island’s indigenous name. This island is a popular tourist destination. The fire has been going on for 6 weeks and had already destroyed 40% of the environment before Monday. The fire is believed to have been started by an illegal campfire and was later bolstered by the heatwave that hit Australia on Monday. CBS reports that firefighters have been using water bombing aircrafts to quell the fire. Since Saturday, they’ve already used over one million liters of water, this was reported on Tuesday. Firefights are focusing on balancing their management of the blaze while also not inflicting any more damage on the environment. Fire and Emergency Services have also released a 7 day fire ban on Monday, to prepare for the difficult weather conditions. Along with that, CNN reports they also released a “prepare to leave” warning to all remaining residents on Fraser Island, this was on Tuesday. With the heatwave still going, more cities in Australia are reporting fires as well, foreshadowing another hard winter for Australia.
