For most people, Halloween is a time to get dressed up, eat candy corn, carve pumpkins, and most importantly watch scary movies. Some people like the classic spooky movies such as  Halloween as well as The Shining by Stephen King. Most families enjoy kid-friendly movies such as Coraline and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. However, newer movies can provide the same suspenseful thrilling feeling that the classics convey. The 2019 movie titled Us was written by Jordan Peele and it is a psychological thriller/ horror movie that keeps viewers at the edge of their seats. Not only is Us a scary movie, but it also makes viewers think and piece the mystery of the plot together.

This movie starts off with a scene on the boardwalk as a little girl wanders off into a scary haunted room. Then, this little girl meets an exact replica of herself and is terrified at the sight. Following this scene enters the little girl all grown up with a family, as they encounter horrifying events together. All of the events in this movie are extremely suspenseful and gory, which is why this movie should be watched during the Halloween season. Not only is this movie thrilling and scary, however, but it also contains small clues and symbols which the viewers should try to put together while watching the movie. According to Rogerubert Review, “Part of the appeal of ‘Us’ is how you interpret what all of this information and images mean”. Attention to small detail is important. The first scene and images are vitally significant as the plot progresses, and can be comprehended when the ending occurs. Vox explains, “Us is likely to frustrate people who crave plot points that can be coherently explained and mapped explicitly, directly onto the real world” which means viewers will likely slowly piece together the plot by the end of the movie. This movie is not only horrific, but it dives deep into psychology and social constructs.

The physiological images and themes also provide a political statement through the events that occur. Peele said that “This movie is about this country”, which provides a deeper meaning in the mix of horror. In the spirit of Halloween, the 2019 thriller titled Us provides a mix of horror with a deeper political statement to dive deeper into route issues in society while also conveying a scary plot.
