Yankees Future Salary Cap Problems

Yankees Future Salary Cap Problems

Currently the Yankees have an unbelievable young core of talent, and perfect veterain leadership.  Where do you start with this team?  You have the best contact hitter in baseball in DJ Lemahieu at the top of the order consistently hitting over .300.  Then you have the face of baseball in Aaron Judge.  Yes he is the face of baseball.  Also, you have home run hitters in the middle of the lineup in Luke Voit, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Hicks.  Also, they have a young superstar shortstop Gleyber Torres.  The Yankees also have a catcher in Gary Sanchez who has the potential to become the best overall hitter in baseball.  Gio Urshela is a phenomenal defensive third baseman and an extremely underrated slugger.

The Yankees still have a top five to ten bullpen in baseball with flamethrower Alrodis Chapman closing out games for them over the last three years.  Also, they have veterain set up man Zack Brittain, and veterans high leverage reliever Adam Ottovino.  Last offseason the Yankees got the number one free agent on the market, superstar pitcher Garret Cole who is built perfectly for the Bronx.  They also have Masahiro Tanaka who is an average number two starter in the rotation, but his game goes to the next level during the postseason.

The Yankees are right in the middle of a playoff run, and face their division foes the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS starting Monday night.  They are currently the betting favorites to win it all this year.  They also should be the favorites for the 2021 season.

Now with all of that being said the Yankees could still run into some major problems keeping all of these young and up and coming players.  Yes there is no salary cap in baseball but although the Stenbrenor family has a lot and I mean a lot of money I am not sure if they really  want to pay the luxury tax.  The Stenbrenor family thinks this team can win by staying under the luxury tax.

The first priority for the Yankees is this offseason you have to resign DJ Lemahieu.  This is a must over the last two seasons he has been the best and most consistent hitter in their lineup.  DJs contract is going to cost the Yankees probably 150 million over the next 4 to 5 years which is a lot of money for someone who is going to be 33 going into the first year of that type of deal.  Now the current face of baseball Aaron Judge is going to cost the Yankees over 300 million dollars over the next 10-12 years.  Now Yankee fans love Judge and as I mentioned he is the current face and the future face of baseball, however he is extremely injury prone and has not finished a season without missing significant time.  Which must be very frustrating for the ownership group of the Yankees because they know they have to pay Judge in order to try and continue to win championships.  With Cole, Judge, and Lemahieu taking up half the payroll in the future puts the Yankees in an extremely tough spot (this is after Judge gets a contract extension).  Not even to mention the Yankees still have Giancarlo Stanton who is making 25 million dollars over the next nine seasons.  Now that’s around 120 million dollars on the Yankees payroll per year coming up once Judge signs his contract extension.  In baseball there is no salary cap, but there is a luxury tax if you have a payroll higher than 210 million dollar payroll.  Once Judge signs his extension the Yankees are going to have to pick who they want on their roster moving forward.  They are going to have to choose probably four of these eight players: Luke Voit, Gio Ursela, Gleyber Torres, Gary Sanchez, Clint Fraizer, Miguel Andujar, Kyle Higashioka, and Mike Tauchman.  This is going to be an extremely difficult decision for Yankee ownership and it is a decision they are going to have to make sooner than they would like too.
