Super Bowl LIV
February 5, 2020
With two young teams headlining football’s biggest stage, at the beginning of Super Bowl LIV, we didn’t see much of the explosive plays but we saw small mistakes that added up.
Those mistakes started early in the first quarter with 49ers returned Richie James Jr. muffing the punt on San Francisco’s first possession. Although James was able to hop on the ball before any Chiefs player was able to this muffed punt showed some early nerves.
Both quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jimmy Garoppolo would have two interceptions on the night. Heading into the game both quarterbacks combined for a total of one interception throughout the postseason this year. To see that number near quadruple is very shocking.
However, not all four of these interceptions were on the quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes’ second interception was almost entirely on Tyreke Hill. Although the ball was slightly behind Hill it was a very catchable ball that should not have gone through his hands and into a 49ers defenders arm.
Even though throughout the game Mahomes looked very shaky with some of his passes which we haven’t seen from him all year, he for sure made up for it late in the game.
Mahomes put his superstar accuracy and power on display after his second pick and slowly got them back in the game. With a mix of smart and short passes, long passes when they opened up to him and a few runs by himself, Mahomes helped the Chiefs put 21 unanswered points on the board in the fourth quarter alone.
In the end, Patrick Mahomes went on to win super bowl MVP. It can be argued that Damien Williams could very much have won. Williams concluded his super bowl night with 17 carries for 104 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also had 29 receiving yards and a touchdown reception. With two touchdowns and a total of 133 total yards from scrimmage it very well could have gone the other way.
Williams wasn’t the only player on the Chiefs who stepped up. Both Chiefs wide receivers had great games. Tyreek Hill was over 100 yards on the night, with 105 yards on nine receptions, including a 44-yard bomb. Sammy Watkins was right there, as well, with 98 yards on five receptions for a whopping 19.6 average.
Even though Kansas City’s defense was only able to bring down Garoppolo once the defense managed to control the 49ers run game. The 49ers were the number one rushing team in the regular season averaging 204 yards a game. The 49ers rushed for a total of 141 yards and a touchdown, and the Chiefs limited Raheem Mostert to 58 yards.
What the Chiefs did will go down in history. Like the previous two Super Bowls the team that won managed to come back from a double-digit opponent lead.
The Chiefs 10-point comeback ties the second largest in SuperBowl history. This comeback is behind of course we all know the 25 point comeback the Patriots had on the Falcons in Super Bowl LI.
With almost everybody giving all the credit to Mahomes head coach Andy Reid deserves a lot of credit as well. Sunday night marked coach Reid’s first-ever Super Bowl and he will no longer be the winningest head coach without a Super Bowl.
It was a much-needed win for this Chiefs team to show the entire league that this young team isn’t going away anytime soon.
