On October 25th, Kanye West released his ninth studio album titled Jesus is King, a long-awaited project heavily influenced by the rapper and producer’s newfound interest in religion. To start off, this album was highly anticipated due to West’s false release dates and translucency in the progress of Jesus is King. Originally titled Yandhi, Kanye first teased the album with the original cover art on September 17th, 2018 through social media. This initial post stated that the album release would be on September 29th, 2019. However, when this day came, the album never released. Two days after this first false release, Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian West tweeted that the new release would be on Black Friday 2018, or November 23rd. Then, two weeks before this date, Kanye tweeted again that the album was not ready and needed more time. Much time later, in August 2019, Kim Kardashian West tweeted that Kanye would be releasing a new album titled Jesus is King instead of Yandhi. The initial release date for this was to be September 27th, 2019. To everybody’s dismay, it didn’t drop once again, although he released an Imax movie previewing the album. Then, on October 12th, the new date of October 25th was revealed. When this day finally came, fans prayed that it would release. When the clock struck twelve, millions of fans refreshed their Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud pages hoping for some new Kanye music but once again the album did not release. However, around two in the afternoon on the same day, the album finally made its way into music platforms. The day had finally come.

Prior to the release of Jesus is King, Kanye announced that he would only be producing gospel music from now on, and this shift in creative direction is quite apparent on the new project. Many fans dislike the album due to the lack of rap and catchiness that Kanye is famous for, but his talent surely shows on tracks such as “Every Hour” which packs the intensity of an entire gospel choir, or “Water,” which contains beautiful production and lyrics. Despite outrage from some of West’s followers, tracks such as “Follow God”

prove that Kanye still has the ability to make a hit rap song, with his famous rap beat sampling and lyrical flow. One track that particularly sticks out is “On God.” This track follows a very loose, airy beat produced by no other than Pierre Bourne (made famous for his work on rapper Playboi Carti’s albums). All in all,
Jesus is King is a masterfully crafted piece of work showing artist Kanye West’s shift in musical focus after an extremely long, grueling wait.
