Photo of the Week: April 29-May 3
April 30, 2019
Photo courtesy of Catherine Callahan. The photo above was taken in an exhibition at The New Museum in Manhattan’s Lower East Side on January 1, 2017. Sheer, shifting sheets draped from the ceiling distort a rounded video projection. The images scattered are of leaves as if the viewer is peering through the gaps in the trees as they move forward through the path. The upward images to the front suggest that forward movement is a transcendence, an upheaval from the grounded state. The sheets are showcased by a light flare, drawing the eye to the dichotomy between linear light through the sheets and the circular image to the left. The multiple shadows refracted of the subject, myself, adds depth and contrast to a piece otherwise abstracted by the contemporary art projection.
