Laker’s President of Basketball Operations, Magic Johnson, Steps Down!
April 22, 2019
On Wednesday, April 10th, former legendary Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard, Magic Johnson, resigned as the team’s President of Basketball Operations. Johnson was in charge of all basketball moves regarding the Lakers, including the signing of free agents, managing contracts, etc.. Magic Johnson was responsible for recruiting and signing, perhaps, the best player of all time, Lebron James. Johnson’s resignation came as a surprise to most, who expected he would want to stay involved with his former team. Magic claims that he “just wasn’t having fun.” During his exit press conference, Magic Johnson mentioned a specific example that made him realize he was not doing something he truly enjoyed. He says, “I thought about Dwyane Wade retiring and I can’t even tweet it out — I can’t be there… I was thinking about all those times, all the guys who want me to mentor them or be a part of their lives, and I can’t even do that. I had more fun on the other side than on this side. Because tomorrow I would have to affect somebody’s livelihood and their life, and I thought about that and said, ‘That’s not for me. That’s not who I am.’” Before taking the job of President of Basketball Operations with the Lakers, Johnson was someone who would mentor young players and would act as an ambassador to young players. He was also known as a fun person who was friendly with all and active in life. In his role with the Lakers, he could not do any of this and could not have fun, therefore resulting in his resignation.
