The Past and Future of Mendham Girls Basketball

Joey Puzino

For the first time ever the Mendham Girl Basketball team held an alumni game/event where the past student-athletes of Mendham Girl Basketball would come and watch the current basketball team play. I was able to sit down with one of the Coaches of Mendham Basketball and one of the most favorite guidance counselors, Ms. Klimowicz. “The alumni game is about helping players recognize that they are part of more of the community than they are the program itself,” as Coach Klimowicz was able to explain. The game was more than just beating Montville and showing their talent it was about seeing old friends and players, and being able to show how this Girls team has advanced since they left. There were some important past MGB players that showed up like Molly Creamer, furthered her career at Bucknell and became the all-time leading scorer to then play overseas professionally. There were other impressive past Mendham stars like Liz Malman, who is now at Connecticut College, and Ashley Gehrin, currently starting at Gettysburg University. “This alumni recognition game was an opportunity for former players and coaches to come to watch us play while having the opportunity to see their former teammates and coaches.” As Coach Klimowicz stated when asked about the game being more than showing off this team’s talent. The Mendham girls Basketball team is a young team with only having two seniors and three juniors but are talented and will be able to succeed for this season. One of the seniors from the 2015 class, Irene Margiotta, who played on the team and was excited for this game to happen. I sat down with Ms. Margiotta and I talked to her for a little about the team and her feelings about the game, Margiotta stated, “That the game was fun to watch, but of course was a hard loss, this team is young and talented they will be having a good season.” More than game to watch when asked about Margiotta feelings towards seeing her old teammates, “ I missed them, I was more than happy to see them, yesterday was a fun game and just an overall fun time.” This alumni game has affected more than just the current players and the past, everyone part of this program reacted positivity towards the alumni game. Ms. Klimowicz ended on the note “This girls team will be a team to reckon with,” and with her as a talented and intelligent coach this team will certainly be a team to reckon with. Let’s go Mendham Girls Basketball!
