The Top 5 Memes of 2018

While looking back on the wonderful, eventful year that was 2018, people tend to think about the most wonderful and impactful moments that took place. Between the 2018 Winter Olympics and scientists successfully cloning monkeys and opening up new frontiers in scientific knowledge, this year was a success. You know what was also significant in 2018? The innovative and creative advances in meme culture. This is a list compiling a few of the most glorious, laugh-inducing funnies that plagued our minds this year.

Connect Four:
Many people know Connect Four as the Hasbro tabletop game in which two players take alternating turns placing checker pieces into a vertically suspended grid. The first player to connect four checkers vertically, horizontally, or diagonally wins the game. It was supposed to be one of those simple and ordinary games. The type that entertained small children and bored parents the point where they just let their children win. However, 2018 had other ideas. Photoshopping the game’s cover art mercilessly into a more absurd game concept became the past time of many teens. Parodies like Connect Four Thousand, Connect Flour, Conec One, and Cone emerged online in January.

Moth Lamp:
For some reason, people became infatuated with jokes about moths being strongly attracted to the glowing light produced by lamps. This meme saw a surge in popularity when a photo of a giant moth circulated on the internet during the summer of 2018. It bore a striking resemblance to the “Brother, May I Have Some Loops” meme that attracted a lot of popularity around the same time. A prime example of the moth lamp memes is a photo of a moth holding a baguette and wearing a beret, captioned “when you find out Paris is the city of lights.”

You So Precious When You Smile:
In October of 2017, music artist Bazzi uploaded his song “Mine” to his YouTube channel, which amassed about 4.7 million views and 4,500 comments by January. This plunged us into a year of wonderful memes, especially after a YouTuber created a remix video using the lyric “you so precious when you smile.” The remix combined with the “Be Mine” Snapchat lens was utilized by many people in videos made to express love or appreciation for a friend, crush, or celebrity. Perhaps when you look back in 2018, you will remember the people of the internet, dancing to this song wearing mannequin heads and sending the videos to people without context.

Is This a Pigeon?:
“Is this a pigeon?” is a glorious quote said by the main protagonist of the 1990s Japanese anime TV series The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird. In the scene, he identifies a butterfly as a pigeon and the internet expressed its utter confusion in the form of memes. People took the screen cap of the quote and twisted the scene into different and equally hilarious misinterpretations. Among the best is the butterfly, photoshopped into Axe Body Spray, and the protagonist, middle school boys, asking “Is this a shower?”

Alexa, Play Despacito:
“This is so sad Alexa play Despacito” is a catchphrase and phrasal template of a mock conversation between a user and their Alexa digital assistant. Although it is considered a dead meme, it still has its charm. It was used largely to express the depression among people online, and so during the months of 2018, many were having mental breakdowns and asking Alexa for assistance.
