Many Americans who are tuned into government and politics have heard about the upcoming and extremely controversial 2024 election. The 2024 presidential election is approaching within the upcoming months, and the Democratic and Republican primaries have already started taking place across the country. The presidential election every four years has caused lots of debate and controversy in 2024. With two returning presidents appearing to be the likely Democratic and Republican nominees Donald Trump and Joe Biden, many have shared their strong opinions in favor or disapproval of either or both candidates. Though some may not be as informed on politics, the election will have a direct effect on every United States citizen. It is clear that citizens are feeling the pressure of not having their desired party, or individual, win the election.
One main projected candidate is Democratic and incumbent president Joe Biden, who is running for his second term. His current four year term has been debated by many between the Democratic and Republican parties, similarly, his main opponent Donald Trump, who was elected as president in 2016, also had a very controversial term. Trump’s term only lasted four years, bringing him back for what he hopes to be his second term after losing the election to Biden. The Democratic Party primary election competitors running against incumbent Biden consist of Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips; however, Biden is leading the other politicians by 63 delegates according to The Associated Press. With such a large delegate lead, Biden is most likely to come out victorious for the primary. President Biden was the vice president for both of Barack Obama’s terms. Obama was a commonly well-liked past president, possibly giving Biden some respect and popularity for this year’s campaign. This gave Biden White House experience that assisted him in the 2020 presidential election.
Additionally, Biden represented Delaware for 36 years in the Senate, earning the trust of many individuals who reside, or have resided in, Delaware. He is the 46th president, and was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. While many enjoyed policies he has instilled while president, others are not too fond of his political viewpoints. According to The White House, Biden’s most well-known policies consisted of The Inflation Reduction Act, immigration bills, increased environmental concern, gun restriction laws, pro-choice bills, and health care policies. These instilled policies, and increased focus on some of America’s largest topics have gained lots of Americans’ support; however, there is still a large amount of citizens who are displeased with what he has done, or do not believe his policies are as effective as they are portrayed.
Donald Trump is most likely going to be the Republican Party presidential nominee. Trump was the 45th president of the United States. Trump was also a very controversial president, which ultimately led to his defeat by Joe Biden. A few of his largest well-known policies included individual as well as corporate tax-cuts and attempts in repealing the Affordable Care Act instilled by former president Barack Obama, according to The White House. One of Donald Trump’s biggest investments went into immigration; he built a wall on the United States southern border between the U.S. and Mexico. As stated by Trump White House, “Illegal crossings have plummeted over 87 percent where the wall has been constructed.” Many individuals who are both Republicans and Democrats have been opposed to many of Trump’s immigration policies making his term more controversial, while others have encouraged the strict immigration laws.
Prior to his presidency Trump had little to no experience in the federal government, surprising the masses with his victorious win in 2016. He grew up in Queens, New York, and later was given his father’s estate. He studied science in economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Many were displeased with what he had done during his presidency; however, following Biden’s presidency some are questioning their prior opinions. The Republican Party has already had a few primaries, all of them resulting with Trump as victorious. Trump’s competitor is Republican Nikki Haley, as other politicians have dropped out such as Ron Desantis, and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie due to their low success rates in the polls, and low campaign funds.
Without doubt, regardless of the results in the 2024 presidential election, there will be a lot of controversy from either side. Many factors will influence this year’s election. Having two individuals who have been recent presidents running against each other has made voters much more hesitant to pick which person to vote for.
