Medina Spirit, ridden by Jockey John R. Velazquez has won the 147th Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit won after a challenging battle against Mandaloun. Medina Spirit and Mandaloun were in a very tight race but Spirit was able to cross the finish line half a length ahead of Mandaloun. Baffert Medina Spirits Trainer said, “I’m so spoiled bringing these heavy-duty horses in here, and this little horse has a big heart” (CBS). This race is Baffert’s seventh Kentucky Derby win. Only two of Baffert’s seven winnings have one off of double-digit odds, Medina Spirit being one of them. Velazquez expressed that he was grateful Medina Spirit had won because Baffert did not think much of this horse. Velazquez also said “Every time I asked him to give more, he kept fighting on,” he said. “When you ride a horse like this who is competitive, you can’t ask for anything else” (NY Times). This will be Velazquez’s fourth Kentucky Derby win, “There’s no words to describe it,” Velazquez said.”This doesn’t get old” (CBS). This win puts him one win behind the all-time record shared by Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack. This crazy race has made him one of the best horse racers out there.
