New On Broadway! To Kill A Mockingbird

New On Broadway! To Kill A Mockingbird

Alethea Bergad

If you found yourself a fan of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, now there is a way to watch the story unfold live. The production has been put together by an amazing group of designers and actors, some whom are relatively new to the show business.

Here is an insight to who all are working together to bring this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to life.

Production Crew

Screenwriter: Aaron Sorkin

American screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, is back with his third play. This time he has chosen to transform Harper Lee’s stunning Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird into a play. The novel’s beloved characters are being brought life live and on stage by Sorkin and the rest of the production crew.

Director: Bartlett Sher

The Director of the play is Bartlett Sher. Sher is no rookie in directing, he has been

nominated for many of his Broadway productions. Sher won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Musical for both Fiddler on the Roof and South Pacific. He also won the Tony award for Best Director of a Play for South Pacific. To Kill a Mockingbird will be Sher’s 12th Broadway production and 5th play. Sher is a major part of bringing the character from the pages to the stage. He works with the actors in order to ensure their vernacular is an accurate depiction of the book’s characters.

Costume Design: Ann Roth

Ann Roth, as the costume designer, also plays a major role in creating an accurate depiction of all the characters. Roth has also won many awards for her costumes. She has won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costumes in a Musical for the musical Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, and the Tony award for Best Costume Design for a Play for The Nance. Roth’s job is very important in the way of making the characters look the way the book depicts them. This consists of making Scout’s overalls and her iconic ham costume, along with Atticus Finch’s proper looking apparel.

Set Design: Miriam Buether

Not only is it important for the characters to look like their descriptions from the book, but the set also needs to have this factor. Miriam Buether has been selected to design the sets for To Kill a Mockingbird. Buether has won Drama Desk Hudson Award for Outstanding Set Design of a Play for Three Tall Women. She must take the descriptions of Maycomb, Alabama and design it in a way that works for the stage. Buether is responsible for all the different scenes that appear in the play, such as the courtroom which becomes of major importance in the storyline.

Lighting and Sound: Jennifer Tipton and Scott Lehrer

Lighting and sound are just as important as the set itself. Without these elements, the scenes would not be brought fully to life. Lighting designer, Jennifer Tipton, and sound director, Scott Lehrer, have the important jobs of making sure the audience can see and hear the actors on stage. Tipton has won five Drama Desk awards for Outstanding Lighting Design and two Tony Awards for the Best Lighting Design. She knows her job well and how to make sure that the lighting on the stage is done in a way that can and will entice the audience. Lehre has also won several awards. He has won two Drama Desk awards for Outstanding Sound Design, one being for a musical, along with a Tony Award for Best Sound Design. Both of the designers are there to bring the play to life so that the audience can feel as though they have been sucked into the novel.

Actors (Main Characters)

Atticus Finch: Jeff Daniels

The character of Atticus Finch is being portrayed by Jeff Daniels. He has starred in several other Broadway productions such as Blackbird and The Golden Age. Daniels has received several nominations for Tony Awards for both Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play and Best Actor in a Play. Unfortunately, he has not won any of these awards. Maybe To Kill a Mockingbird will grant him the win he has been working for.

Scout: Celia Keenan-Bolger

The character Scout is being portrayed by the actress Celia Keenan-Bolger. She has previously starred in the productions of The Cherry Orchard and Peter and the Starcatcher. She has been nominated and won several awards for her performances in The Glass Menagerie and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. For The Glass Menagerie, she won the Theatre World Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence and the Drama Desk Award Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Keenan-Bolger won the Theater World Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance for her performance in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She definitely has a way of bringing beloved characters to life, which makes it clear as to why she has been chosen to portray Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Jem: The character of Jem Finch is being portrayed by Will Pullen. Pullen is still relatively new to the world of Broadway. He has only been in one Broadway production aside from To Kill a Mockingbird. His previous role was Jason in the drama Sweat. Although Pullen has only had one character role, he won the Drama Desk Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance for The Wayside Motor Inn. Pullen is clearly a talented actor due to his ability to have already won an award when being a new face on Broadway.

Boo Radley: This is Danny Wolohan’s first role in a Broadway play. Since Wolohan is new to Broadway, with To Kill a Mockingbird being his first production, he has had no chance to win any award yet. He has been cast to bring the mysterious character of Boo to life. Although Boo might not be considered one of the very main characters, he is the subject of talk in several scenes and makes an appearance that holds a major impact in the plot line. Wolohan’s character, Boo, will hopefully be the kick off for his acting career.
